Some might remember it as the theme from that WWII movie from the early 80s, which happened to star David Bowie. Some might remember it as that irritating trance remix from the late 90s called "Heart of Asia". In any case, here's my piano homage to the great Ryuichi Sakamoto, albeit through inferior recording:
Incidentally, buy this man's CD, as he plays it much better than I do. Hopefully down the road, I'll post music that I actually composed in years past.
I was impressed... I don't remember the song, and typically, I don't know if I would have listened; but when someone puts their own performance up, gotta indulge them. Kudos to both you, and Mr. Sakamoto.
GarageBand at work once again? :)
Sounds like this is a "new performance" rather than something you sent me 6-7 months ago?
The improvised part is cool by the way . Profressor would be proud I am sure. :)
Typo >< "Professor" = Sakamoto... hahah we talk like he's dead already - which he's not.
This time around it was Logic Express. The process of actually recording it was really hacky. (I recorded it on the keyboard via MIDI, played it back through the keyboard, and captured the playback through the audio channel.) I'm eagerly anticipating Asteroid, if the rumors are true.
wow brian, that took me back to those days when i'd hear you playing in the cda on that piano with the disk drive...
wow, this song is better than 12 gold chains and a medallion. i pity the fool who doesn't like this recording.
BRAVISSIMO!
Hi Brian
Unfortunately I could not get Forbidden Colours to play. I am a big Sakamoto fan and I have been looking for the sheet music to Forbidden COlours or any of his piano music.
Can you help me - are you some kinda genious who transcribed it after listyening or have you managed to find the sheet music? Please point me in the right direction. Thank you
Hey brain thats kewl. Like libby i have also been looking for this sheet music a very long time, i wonder if you could perhaps point me in the right direction as of where i can find it, or if you could send me it. If the latter is the case i would be very grateful. Thank you
I'm really impressed with this recording. I stumbled on this page while looking for the original sheet music for Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. The one I have doesn't sound like the original. Thanks for sharing your recording.
Brian, as someone who loves this piece and who also plays it, I have to say your interpretation sounds quite rushed, and much of the harmonic subtlety Sakamoto is renowned for (particularly during the full chord sections) has been stripped out. Your interpretation adds some unique elements, but I don't think they are improvements. To me, they detract, and hit you over the head, when the music (again, to me) is a work of exquisite shifting energies and ingenious harmonic blends. Your rendition sounds almost too primitive and like it's barreling toward some deadline. In doing so, it misses a great deal of the inflection I believe Sakamoto intended the piece to have.
Yes... Of all the things I need to focus on, it's eagerness - particularly when the Record button is on. It leads to all the issues you listed: missed notes, inconsistent timing, and ill-used dynamics. On the other hand, I wasn't striving to "improve" the piece, but offer a different interpretation, under different context. Anyhow, I appreciate your spot-on assessment.
