Girl Scout Cookie Controversy

So I was passing out some Caramel deLites to some of my co-workers, and my world suddenly came crashing down on me when one of them asked,

"'Caramel deLites'? Don't you mean 'Samoas'?"

And then I started thinking to myself... "Do I mean 'Samoas'?" And then I started thinking about the other box of cookies I had wolfed down earlier that day - "Y'know, 'Peanut Butter Sandwich' doesn't sound right... lacks a certain lyricism... I coulda sworn it went by something else."

So I did some quick web research and discovered - to my horror - that Girl Scout Cookies have two different manufacturers, and they get to determine what the cookie name will be! What kind of nonsense is this?

Peanut Butter Sandwich?

Do-si-do?

Caramel deLite?

Samoa?

Peanut Butter Patty?

Tagalong?

The endemic consumer confusion is perhaps perpetuated by the fact that these names are slurred out by bored 7-year-olds. And why they decided to name a cookie after a Filipino language is beyond me.

Other interesting notes about Caramel deLites: That they highlight "Lite" is laughable in itself, and that these things are actually hexagonal (but obscured, of course, by the gobs of caramel and chocolate.)

I found the keys to Keys to Selling Safely section of the ABC Bakers site particularly amusing as some of the rules (i.e. "never carry large sums of cash") might also be applied to "ladies of the night". Perhaps they have found that unsuccessful scouts later repurpose their “safe selling” skills and turn to the "world's oldest profession" to support themselves.

Yep.

We always had the Little Brownie versions, i.e., the names that have nothing to do with the actual cookie.

Then one year, for no discernable reason, the world turned upside-down, and we ended up with the other ones.

Mass confusion.

wait, isn't the language called Tagalog, not tagalong? or is that a joke i missed...again...? anyway, i figured they meant "tagalong" as in "tagging along."

Todd - that's terrible. Especially if you replace all instances of "cookies" with "themselves".

Apparently, it's a bad time to be a Girl Scout! First, there was the boycott from Texan anti-abortion groups because of the youth group's association with Planned Parenthood. Then, it was pointed out that the cookies contain the very unhealthy trans fat. And now there's an article was the New York Times article about their cookies being sold on eBay, against the Girl Scouts' own policies.

Goddamnit, the filipino language is not TAGALONG. It's fucking TAGALOG.

Don't you people have a sense of HUMOR? We know it's "Tagalog." He's just and pointing out its random similarity to the word "Tagalog." (I know Kawabunga is a good speller and I'm sure he spotted the "n".) Besides, why is that other cookie called a Samoa anyway? Do you see any Samoans flipping out? I guess we don't know any Samoans who are reading this. But doesn't it appear to be some peculiar Pacific Islander association with these cookie names?

(I mean, it's not like I get all pissed that there's a rapper now named "Chingy," but i sure think it's funny and weird...) Stupid p.c. misunderstandings... this is like Omarosa thinking that the phrase, "Calling the kettle black" is a racial slur. Can't we all be friends?

(Can I post on here? Let's see if Brian lets me.)

To Todd's comment: Do you suppose there would be a badge for Excellence in the World's Oldest Profession? And, if so, how far up the Girl Scouts chain of command would the police go to arrest the people responsible?

- ryan 06:55 PM 15 Mar 2004

To June & others who thought I misinterpreted "Tagalong" - yes, it was in jest. On a side note, I don't flip out when a product's named "Cheese Nips", although Cheezits are still tastier.

Dang, I didn't expect to find such controversy on the comments page. This Koblogigawa guy is a big fat racist. I bet he's some fat white guy with a gun rack and confederate flag!
